I saw this OVA before I even knew that a manga series existed, and fell in love with it the very first time I saw it, as have the friends I've shown it to. We've all gotten terribly into the manga now, and madly check the nearest Barnes & Noble whenever it seems like the next volume is coming out. You have to be a very open-minded person to enjoy and even just to accept the plot the amazing Kaori Yuki has created, as there are many topics sensitive people may find upsetting (incest, God being evil, etc.) Once past these topics, you find a very unique plot, a strange, but touching love story, and characters who you can truly love. Combined with Kaori Yuki's gorgeous art, Angel Sanctuary is a masterpiece.
It will leave you desperate to find out what happens next. The only things that were disappointing is absence of some of the background that's present in the manga and the fact that there are no plans (that I know of) to make any more volumes into OVAs. As to be expected, however, the American voice acting is far from fabulous (I recommend watching it in Japanese with the subtitles at least once, as with all anime).
I also recommend seeing this before beginning manga, or only reading the first two volumes before seeing it (basically what the OVA covers). If you've gotten too far I have a feeling it'd become just an opportunity to look at Kaori Yuki's pretty art-not that there's anything wrong with that.
Beginning in late twentieth-century Japan, Angel Sanctuary focuses on Setsuna Mudo, a 16-year-old troubled high-school student who is in love with his 15-year-old sister Sara. While struggling with his incestuous feelings for his sister, he learns that he is the reincarnation of Organic Angel Alexiel, who led a rebellion against her fellow angels after witnessing their slaughter of the Evils, a group of demons, after God's disappearance.

At the conclusion of the revolt, she sealed away her younger twin brother, Inorganic Angel Rosiel, within the Earth, emotionally unable to fulfill his request to be killed before he became insane and destructive. Captured and branded a fallen angel, Alexiel is punished by having her body frozen and her soul endlessly reincarnated as a human whose life is full of misery. While Rosiel is freed by his subordinate Katan, Setsuna finds his life and Sara's endangered by various attempts to awaken Alexiel's dormant soul within him. Realizing they cannot bear to be separated, Setsuna and Sara run away together and consummate their love, in hope of starting a new life together.
Sara eventually dies protecting Setsuna from one of Rosiel's subordinates. Devastated, Setsuna awakens Alexiel's soul, causing widespread damage. Adam Kadamon, the angel closest to God, intervenes by turning back time to just after Alexiel's awakening and freezing time on Earth; she then tasks him with freeing her from her imprisonment. To search for Sara's soul, sent to Hell for incest, Setsuna's body enters a near-death state, and his soul searches for hers, eventually learning that it has been taken to Heaven.
Sara, meanwhile, awakens in the body of Jibriel, the archangel of water held captive; revealed to be her reincarnation, Sara is eventually returned to her original body, but finds herself impregnated by the angel Sandolphon, whose soul resides in his brother's body and hopes that she will bear him a body. After Rosiel absorbs him to gain his power, an act which speeds up his physical and mental decay, Sandolphon's remnants possess her, causing her to see Setsuna as a monster. Assisted by Lucifer, ruler of the demons who loves Alexiel, Rosiel unseals the Tower of Etenamenki, where God rests, with Alexiel's body. Intent on restoring the Earth, Setsuna follows him, with Kurai and the archangels of fire and earth; along the way, he aids an injured Katan, who hopes to save Rosiel before he loses his free will to do so.
At the tower, Rosiel kills Katan, only to realize that he had killed the one he loved and tried to protect from himself; he then goes into a state of destructive despair. Awakening in her own body with Setsuna's help, Alexiel reveals to him that she had always loved him: because he had been born the opposite of his healthy sister, she bargained with God to save his life in exchange for her imprisonment, from which she later escaped with Lucifer, and an agreement to never show him any compassion. She then kills him, and absorbs him into her womb so that they will never be apart again.
Before dying, Rosiel passes along his power to Setsuna. Setsuna and his group find Adam Kadamon's head, used to nourish the unborn angels, and learn that she attempted to prevent God's plan of destroying humanity by hiding him and the tower from the angels and freezing time in hopes that Alexiel's reincarnation could save them. Because God draws power through Adam Kadamon, the archangels and Kurai seal her up, while Setsuna confronts God and encounters Sara and Lucifer there. Sara overcomes her possession to cast out Sandolphon, and Setsuna defeats God with Lucifer's help. Time returns to normal on Earth, where Setsuna and Sara joyfully reunite at last.
Synopsis Setsuna Mudo is a college freshman, just trying to get by without running afoul of his bullying seniors. It doesn't help that he's in love with his sister, Sara, who only sees him once a month. But there's more to his life than just keeping his head down.
Setsuna is ambushed by mysterious beings, angels, and demons, all professing to know his true destiny. The angels say he is the reincarnation of their leader Alexiel, while the demons claim he led them to war against God himself. As Setsuna struggles with his identity in such strange times, the eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell threatens to reignite. Will he be prepared when it does? Overall 3 Story 4 Animation 5 Sound 4 Character 3 Enjoyment 3 I take this opportunity to advocate that you go read the manga before you try this OVA. The manga is light years beyond this drek in terms of.
Well, pretty much everything. Needless to say this OVA does NOT do the manga any justice. Some of the animation sequences are pretty, but beyond that, this just sucks. The characters come off flat and obnoxious, and the story seems pointless and haphazard-there is no tension, and it feels like there are no stakes. This does not feel like a semi-Apocalyptic war between the forces of Heaven and Hell. It feels like. Like every other bad pseudo-Biblical post-Evangelion catasterfuck of an anime.
If you're hardcore Christian and would be offended by a rebellion against God being told from the perspective of Fallen Angels, skip it. If not, skip it anyway and read the manga. You'll be glad you did. Overall 2 Story 3 Animation 2 Sound 3 Character 3 Enjoyment 1 Great, another incestuous gay demon supernatural bishounen bishoujo anime. I find myself being redundant if I say 'another stupid anime made from a sub-par manga'. First off, the story is awful and had some of the worst plot I ever saw. It basically follows one guy perving on his younger sister and then angels trying to destroy the earth since the demons are ironically the good guys.
It pretty much goes like this: Boy: I wanna bone my sister!! Sister: I'm pointless! Demons: AH, ANGELS!!
The art was terrible-it looked like every character tripped and fell into Liberace's closet because their colour coordination in their clothes and hair was totally unfabulous. The characters are stupid. Literally stupid. They have no other drive than to serve as boring plot devices to shake and not stir up forced controversy. I cannot enjoy an anime for being so ridiculous.
What a pile of trash-I would rather be locked in a toilet that can't flush than watch this ever again. Overall 9 Story 10 Animation 9 Sound 9 Character 10 Enjoyment 9 Angels are God's messengers that protect humans from danger because they are the good guys. Unlike most stories, the bad guys (the daemons) are the good guys in Angel Sanctuary. Some viewers may find this OVA offensive and sacriligious; however, it isn't an insult on Christianity.
It's a fictional story reversing the roles for once and isn't meant to be persecuting Christianity; just showing the other side of the coin. There are far more films and television shows using crude humour towards Christianity in North America, which are a million times more offensive than Angel Sanctuary.
Putting that aside, the mood for Angel Sanctuary is very dark. It's a gothic drama dealing with the supernatural. It's gory and mature, so younger viewers may not like it. The animation is very good for the year 2000. It doesn't have any computer graphics but it wasn't necessary: the pencil and ink animation was perfect enough. The low-lights in the hair, also the texture of the hair (pretty much everything about the hair) to characters is very wispy and detailed. Short haired people would be envious of the long, flowy hair that these two-dimensional anime characters possess.
There isn't anything bad about the animation other than it's a little out of date. (But not by much) The sound is simplistic, but sets the mood to the OVA.
The music has the dark motif to the OVA, which makes Angel Sanctuary more gothic. Could have used more instruments and a more difficult melody, but the music does what it's supposed to: give the viewer the dramatic feeling.
Although English dubs aren't nearly as bad as many Japanophiles claim, the English dub to Angel Sanctuary was terrible. The acting was alright, the voices were what killed the dub. They sounded way too cartoony for a serious drama that was aimed at a mature audience. Crispin Freeman saved the dub as he showed his genius skills in the role of Rosiel. The voice of Setsuna (Scott Cargle) sounded more like a fourty year old than an older teenager.
Watch this OVA in Japanese, it's much better. The Characters were well developed and didn't have cliche personalities. Sarah's personality is a little too happy, which was the only problem. There is incest in this story line, but Kaori Yuki pulled it off. The incest shows how Setsuna and Sarah struggle to ignore their feelings in a forbidden relationship and not an episode of Jerry Springer.
(They know incest is wrong) Like the theme, they are condemned sinners. Without the mood the incest wouldn't work.
The bad guys aren't extremely evil as most antagonists are portrayed. Then again, everything is reversed. Those who are into dark anime aimed at a mature audience would like Angel Sanctuary. It's tragic, but doesn't require a box of Kleenex. (just a couple) The manga has twenty volumes while the OVA has three episodes, meaning the end of the OVA isn't the end of the series.
Angel Sanctuary should have been an anime series because the storyline scratches the surface. Also, the OVA hooks you into wanting more. It's a promotion or teaser for the manga. With the exceptional storyline and excellent animation, Angel Sanctuarty is one of the best OVA's made. Overall 3 Story 2 Animation 5 Sound 4 Character 3 Enjoyment 1 I know I've overrated this anime, but for me Angel Sanctuary harbors memories I hold close to my heart. This review was originally written in the diary of a young warrior who is no longer among us. Accused of committing high treason he was exiled from the country, but he was given a choice, either that or just watch Angel Sanctuary 100 times over and write a detailed essay on it.
Unaware of the danger that lay before him he went with option B.The poor soul was found hanging in his lockup the following day. Not to brag, but I am far superior to him for I have watched it and I survived. Oh right this is supposed to be a review. So, the central character of this story is this constantly bullied guy with a sister complex, where his sister has an equally noteworthy bro-com. I also got the vibe that their mother has a daughter complex from her sadistic behavior towards her son. Where is this going? What an ignorant question!
It's a battle against god of course. I have to explain everything, don't I? Obviously because the angels tried to destroy the earth.
Angel Sanctuary
And so with the power of the lead character it's up to Setsuna Mudo to defeat god and save her sister from food poisoning. Wait, what about the earth.umm.I'm sure I'll be fine, this isn't DBZ after all. Story: 10^-2 Art: 0.00347689 Sound: 5.6 Character: 10/ ∞ Enjoyment: - ∞ Overall: 3.1.
